Baseball tryouts will be held November 30 and December 1, 4:15 p.m.-6:00 p.m., at the baseball practice field.  Please wear athletic pants and shirts, tennis shoes or cleats, and bring baseball glove, and copy of report card.  Athletics must have current physical in order to try out.  For more information, please see Coach DeWald in room 220.

The Questar English 2 and Algebra 1 tests for first-timers will be administered November 30 – December 4.

SATP2 for Biology 1 and U.S. History for first-timers and re-testers will be November 30 – December 4.

The VHS Choral Department will participate in “Holly Days” at the Southern Heritage Cultural Center on December 5.

SATP2 and Questar state testing will continue the week of December 7 – 11.

The VHS Choral Department Christmas Concert will be on December 8 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

“Poetry Out Loud” will be held on December 9 beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

VHS Teacher Spotlight for the month of November is AP and Dual Credit science instructor Dr. Regina O’Leary.

Track and Field tryouts for boys and girls will be held on November 18 and 19.  All interested athletes must have a current physical.  Please bring running shoes and clothing to try out.  Athletes much be present both days of tryouts.  If you have further questions, please see Coach Banks in room 308B.

The Gator Years yearbook theme this year is “Don’t believe me just watch” from the song “Uptown Funk”.  To connect the theme to VHS, we need your help adapting the lyrics.  Re-write “Uptown Funk” to capture the spirit of VHS.  The winner gets credit in the yearbook and a free yearbook.  Deadline to submit your lyrics is Friday, November 20.

Senior Night will be celebrated before the Vicksburg and Holmes Central football game on November 6 beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the stadium.  All senior football players, band members, cheerleaders, and Gator Girls will be recognized.

Varsity cheer competition will be November 7 at Pearl High School.

The Cross Country State Meet will be November 9 at Clinton High School.

Induction ceremony for the National Technical Honor Society will be November 10, beginning at 10 a.m. in the auditorium.

VHS Teacher Spotlight for the month of October is history instructor Mrs. Evelyn Moore.

Congratulations to the VHS “Pride” Marching Band, Gator Girls, Cheerleaders, and the JROTC for their outstanding performance and stellar representation of the city of Vicksburg in the Alcorn State University Homecoming parade.

In order for the students to participate in the October Movie Madness, they cannot have more than three unexcused absences and five tardies for the month of October.

VHS students are invited to attend the College and Career Night on October 29, from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Warren Central High School in Gym A.

Swimming state competition will be on October 31 in Tupelo, MS.

Musical costume fee is due November 2.  Please contact Mrs. Smithey or Mrs. Chapin for more information.

Mr. William Boyles from Ole Miss is schedule to visit the campus on November 2 beginning at 12 noon in the VHS Café.

Congratulations to Jazmin Jeanea Green as the VHS Homecoming Queen for the 2015-2016 school year.   Jazmin is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Green and Marion Shawn Green.  She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Ellen James and Mr. and Mrs. Marion Green, Sr.  Jazmin is a 5-year cheerleader and a senior cheer captain, a 5-year member of the Missy Gator softball team, vice president of the senior class, and secretary of the Key Club.  She was voted Freshman and Junior class favorite by her peers.  Jazmin also serves as the vice president of the Mu Xi Omega Girls Club of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and a member of the Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy.  She is a senior dancer with the April Green Dance Company and a member of Standfield New Life Christian Church.

Choir uniform and Madrigal costume inspection for all VHS choral students will be conducted on Friday, October 16.  Please contact Mrs. Smithey or Mrs. Chapin for more information.

Selected choral students will participate in the Male Vocal Symposium at Pearl High School on Saturday, October 17.

Homecoming week continues with various activities planned throughout the week.  The Homecoming Parade will be on October 8.  Homecoming Game will on October 9.

The VHS Pride Band will participate in the State Marching Band competition in Pearl on October 10.

No classes for students on October 12 for Fall break.

The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) will be administered at VHS on October 14 in the auditorium for all interested juniors and sophomores.  The cost is $15 and can be paid to Mrs. Tello in the Guidance Office by cash and exact change only.

Tryouts for the Girl’s Archery Team will be October 14 and 15, 4:15 p.m.-5:30 p.m. in the JROTC building.  Physical exams are required in order to tryout.  Please contact Ms. Piazza at 601-636-2914 if you have any questions or need additional information.

The Cross Country Team will participate in the Northeast Lauderdale High School Invitational in Meridian on October 3.

The Swim Team will participate in a meet at Delta State University in Cleveland on October 3.

VHS Homecoming Parade will be on October 8.  Homecoming Game will on October 9.

High School Day at Tougaloo College will be on Friday, October 9.   Registration can be completed online at www.tougaloo.edu.

Punt-Pass-Kick Contest:  Participants must first punt the ball from the end zone.  Wherever the ball lands will designate the place from where the contestants will pass the ball.  From the spot where the pass lands, they will have to successfully kick the field goal with the football through the uprights and take home the grand prize.  Four lucky fans will each win a new Chevrolet!  All you have to do to qualify is text “punt” to 95577 and follow the prompts.  This event is sponsored by Atwood Chevrolet, River 101.3, K-Hits 104.5, 92.7 The Touch, and V105.5.

Selected choral students will participate in the SICC choral conference on September 28 and 29 on the campus of University of Southern Mississippi.

The VHS Swim Team will participate in the WC/VHS Invitational at the City Pool on September 29 beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Please join VHS in the United Way of West Central Mississippi’s True Color Run on Saturday, September 19.  Register by visiting http://unitedwayvicksburg.org/run. The school with the highest number of participants will win $500 for their school’s library.

Retest for the SATP2 for Biology I and U.S. History will begin September 21 - September 25.

The VHS Swim Team will participate in the Northwest Rankin Invitational at the Flowood YMCA on Monday, September 21 beginning at 4:00 p.m.

A Reality Fair for all Freshmen and Vo-Tech students will be on Tuesday, September 22 in the VHS gym.

Senior status letters will be distributed to Seniors and also mailed home within the next few weeks.  These letters will contain GPA, class rank, lists any needed state tests, number of credits, and courses needed to graduate.

Auditions continue immediately after school on September 9 in the choir room for this year’s musical “The Wizard of Oz”.  Auditions are open to all VHS students.  There are several non-singing roles this year, such as the Wicked Witch and the Wizard of Oz himself.  Audition information can be picked up in the band hall or in room 215.  Call backs will be September 15.

The VHS Jr. ROTC will have a 9/11 ceremony on Friday beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The Bobby Huell Appreciation Football Night will begin at 5:00 p.m. on September 11.

The VHS Swim Team will participate in the St. Al Invitation at the City Pool on September 12 beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Selected choral students will participate in the MSU Choral Colloquium on September 13-14 on the campus of Mississippi State University.

·         Information for the APEX Summer School 2015 is as follows:  There will be two sessions for Credit Recovery and one session of New Subjects for the APEX Summer School 2015.  The 1st Credit Recovery session will be June 8 – Jun 19 in the VHS Library from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.  Orientation will be June 8.  The 2nd Credit Recovery session will be June 22 – July 3 in the VHS Library from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.  Orientation will be June 22.  The New Subjects session will be June 8 – July 3 in the VHS Library from 9:00 a.m. – 10 a.m.  Orientation will be June 8.  There are a total of 40 slots available for each of the Credit Recovery sessions and 20 slots available for the New Subjects session.  Placement in the program is strictly based on first come/first served.  Quizzes/Chapter tests are to be completed online, except for final exam.  The final exam will be a traditional, pen and paper exam that will be given on the last day of each session.  The courses offered:  English I, Algebra I, Geography, Biology, French I/II, English II, Government, Geometry, World History, Physical Science, Spanish I/II, English III, U.S. History, and English IV.   Students must meet enrollment qualifications for APEX.  Students will have the opportunity to work on APEX in VHS Room 207, Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon.  Registration fee for Credit Recovery is $100.  Registration fee for New Subjects is $300.

VHS Senior Awards Night will be on Monday, May 11, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

Marching Band auditions will be held May 11 – May 14, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on the band practice field.

Cap and gown pictures may be picked up in Room 104.

·         The VHS 2015 Senior Gator Award recipients are:  Torey Daniels, Erica Darden, India Jones, Briana Knox, Kori Screws, Tyler Smith, I’Sheana Stamps, Ishmael Thompson, Marcus Williams, Darbie Woods, and Stefan Young.

·         Mrs. Lamb’s Physics and AP Physics classes participated in a live virtual field trip of NASA’s Goddard Space Center on May 1 to celebrate Space Day.  Senior Cody Gardner said, “It makes me proud to be working on becoming a civil engineer.”

·         Teachers’ Appreciation Week is May 4 – May 8.  The VHS PTO is sponsoring a Faculty Breakfast on May 5, which is Teacher Appreciation Day, beginning at 8:00 a.m.  Parent volunteers will also assist the teachers by making photocopies for them each morning from 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. during the whole week.  Any parent who would like to assist in these activities can contact Mrs. Katrina Johnson at 601-415-7492. 

·         The VHS Athletic Banquet will be Monday, May 4 beginning at 6:00 p.m.

·         The VHS Band Banquet will be Tuesday, May 5 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

·         Tryouts for the VHS Swim Team will be held Tuesday, May 5 and Thursday, May 7 at 4:00 p.m. at the Vicksburg YMCA.  Students must have an updated physical to tryout.  No two-pieces, boxers, t-shirts, or briefs will be allowed.  The use of goggles and swim caps is advised.  For more information contact E. On Tuesday, April 21, Mrs. Velazquez’s Spanish 2 students had a real life experience in the classroom.  Members of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and volunteers came to VHS, and the Spanish 2 students had to interview them in Spanish.  The following speakers and volunteers who participated were Lyan Garcia, Mariely Mejias, Javier Osorio, Henry Diaz-Alvarez, Yamiretsy Pagan, Omar Esquilin, Axel Montalvo, Luis De Jesus, Juliana Bueno, Gerardo Velazquez, Gustavo Emmanuelli, and Natalia Ocasio.  Students will also write a biography of the guests in Spanish.

The VHS Fine Arts Choral Department presents “Through the Decades”, a night of fun, song, and dance with a small representation of music from each decade beginning with the 50’s.  The program will be held in the VHS Auditorium on Tuesday, April 28, 6:30 p.m.  Admission is $3.00 and concessions will be available.  For more information contact Tracy Smithey at 601-831-1807.

The Vicksburg High School Missy Gators Varsity Basketball tryouts will be held on April 27 – April 29 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the VHS gym.  The attire is basketball clothes and shoes.  The students must have a current physical and a copy of their third nine weeks report card.  For more information contact Coach Hartzog at 601-636-2914 ext. 20.

The Gator Spotlight for the week was Adam Stirgus, a 2006 graduate.

The National Honor Society traveled to the Jefferson County Nursing Home on April 15 as part of their services for National Volunteer Week.  The students played bingo with residents and handed out goody bags.

The PTO will meet on Monday, April 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria.  All parents and staff are asked to come and be involved.  Please submit any items for discussion at the meeting or any ideas for the betterment of our school to vicksburghs@gmail.com

The physical schedule for VHS athletes will be Saturday, April 25, starting at 10:30 a.m., at Warren Central High School.  Students are to enter Building B entrance under the stadium (Tennis Court end).

VHS Relay for Life team will sponsor Newks’ Night at Newks from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 13.  All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.  Please come out and support this worthy cause.

The VHS Gator Girl Clinic will be April 13th – April 16th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the VHS JROTC Building.  Tryouts will be held on April 17th at 8:30 a.m. at the VHS JROTC Building.  For more information feel free to contact Kim Stevens at 601-738-5694.

The VHS Varsity and Women’s choirs will compete in the state competition on Friday, April 17th.

Congratulations to the VHS Tennis Team on their winning season (6 and 3).  They will play for District next week.

Alcorn State University, the Mississippi Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration will host a three-week residential program, Mississippi Summer Transportation Institute, where participants will receive enrichment courses and labs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, as well as job and life skills.  For more information contact the MSTI office at 601-877-6440/3964.  Application deadline is May 8th.

The VHS weekly Gator Spotlight featured Mr. Brian Crawford of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

All eleven VHS students who attended the regional science fair at Jackson State University placed in their respective categories.  The first place winners included Chloei Fulgham, Yolanda Parson, and Paul Auttonberry.  The second place winner was Christopher Farrish.  Third place winners included Evonte’ Shepherd, Edward Auttonberry, and Kionna Taylor.  The fourth place winner was Slade Kingston-Miles.  Fifth place winners were Walter Boyd and Brittany Brewer.  The sixth place winner was Dyamond Benton.  The first through third place winners were eligible to attend the state science fair in Hattiesburg on March 24th.  At the state science fair, Chloei Fulgham won second place and was named the winner of the Yale Science and Engineering Award; Yolanda Parson placed fourth. 

Varsity Boys basketball tryouts will be April 8th, 9th, and 10th, beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the VHS gym.  The attire is shorts, t-shirt, and basketball shoes.  The students must have a current physical and copy of their grades.  If additional information is needed, please contact Coach Dellie Robinson.

Senior graduation products will be delivered to VHS on April 2nd during lunch.  Students who have a balance must pay the balance on this date. 

The VHS Junior Class honored the memory of their dear classmate, Danielle Peoples, by placing flowers at her grave on March 27th.  March 7, 2015 marked one year since her death.

Prom memories can be preserved with the purchase of the 2015 VHS Prom DVD.  The cost is $10.00.

Congratulations to the Vicksburg High Gators Quiz Bowl members for their win at the Black History Quiz Bowl sponsored by the King Solomon Historical Preservation Society.  Team members were Warner Buxton, Nicholas Crasta, Mekahel Dotson, and Jessica Parson.

Congratulations to Edward Auttonberry who participated in the Congress-Bunderstag Youth Exchange Program.  As a result he will spend a month in Germany.

The VHS Madrigals participated in the Lenten Fine Arts at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Vicksburg, MS. Afterwards, they performed a concert for students at Vicksburg Junior High.

Because of the inclement weather, the PTO meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, Mar. 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Some items that will be discussed are scholarships, movie for the AB honor roll students, U-Lace fundraiser, College Night, Computers for Learning, school beautification, Teacher Appreciation Day and Teacher Appreciation Week. All parents and faculty are asked to attend. Please submit any items for discussion at the meeting or any ideas for the betterment of our school to vicksburghs@gmail.com.

All Juniors will be given the ACT on Mar. 3. Parents of Juniors are asked to make sure their child is presents and on time. The cost of the ACT is covered by the state. Students can practice using the ACT section of USA Test Prep. For login information, contact the Guidance Office of VHS.

The VHS family congratulates Mrs. Donna Carpenter on being chosen as the Vicksburg Chamber of Commerce Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Kevia Davis traveled with Dr. Tameka Henderson to WLBT to discuss the S.A.V.E. grant that VHS was awarded and the activities done thus far on the mid-day report.
The VHS National Honor Society would like to thank those who donated to the clothing drive. It was a huge success. The clothes were donated to Mountain of Faith Ministries.
The VHS Varsity and Women’s Choir participated in the District Choral Competition in Pearl. Both choirs earned superior ratings. Students from VHS Family and Consumer Science class were afforded the opportunity to go behind the scenes of WLBT3/FOX 40 News Studios in Jackson, MS. News anchor Joy Redmon allowed the students to sit behind the news desk and read actual news clips of leading stories in the local area. The next field trip will be to the Mississippi Baking Company in Pelahatchie, MS on Feb. 24. All visits are geared toward exposing students to diverse career paths.
There will be a senior transition meeting at Hinds Vo-Tech Center on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 3:00 p.m.
The VHS S.A.V.E. Chapter will host a Prom Safety Awareness Day on Friday, Feb. 27, for Juniors and Seniors in the auditorium. The guest speaker will be Ms. Cassandra Reed, founder of the ARL Project. Members of the community will set up booths during lunch so students can participate in various activities and pick up valuable information.

Our Gator Spotlight featured Mr. Troy Stewart, Jr., a math teacher at VHS.

The VHS Key Club members are in the middle of their Vicksburg Kiwanis Club Chili Feast ticket drive. The chili will be prepared by Kiwanis and Key Club volunteers on Feb. 13. All proceeds will go to the Vicksburg Kiwanis Youth Fund. Last year this program provided 13 scholarships; eleven of them went to VHS graduates. Please help our students help themselves.

On Feb. 6 the guidance office will sponsor a college day visit to Hinds Community College in Raymond for students to participate in their “Eagle Experience 2015”. Students will have a chance to learn about several areas of interest, tour the Raymond Campus, interact with faculty and students, and enjoy free food and prizes. Students must sign up in the guidance office by Feb. 2.

Are you wondering what to do with those gently worn clothes and shoes lying around the house? Well, we have an option for you. The VHS chapter of the National Honor Society will hold a clothing drive from Feb. 2-13. All items can be dropped off in an English teacher’s classroom.

The induction ceremony for the new members of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society will be Feb. 6, 11 a.m., in the auditorium.

The VHS boys’ soccer team traveled to Lewisburg, MS to compete in the Class 5A soccer tournament and the girls’ soccer team played at home. The VHS family is proud of their valiant effort in these competitions.

Thanks to everyone who made the VHS Fine Arts department’s musical presentation of “Tarzan” a tremendous success.

Graduating seniors of 2015 are reminded that Feb. 6 is the deadline to submit their one-page essay on “The Importance of Volunteerism” sponsored by the United Way. No late entries will be accepted. First place winner will receive a $500 book scholarship, and the second place winner will receive a $250 book scholarship.

Students participating in the Vicksburg High Choral Department musical presentation of “Tarzan” are as follows:  Armi Cole, Jadarius Flagg, Tanner Gardner, Troy Jarrett, Race McCool, Zaria Neal, Keondre Price, Jamison Watson, Darbie Woods, Alona Blue, Carmen Braxton, Miesha Bure, Alyssa Chapin, Meena Dhawan, Amy Dixon, Kenzie Irons, Iris Jones, Jessica Long, Makayla McKay, Leyla Shelton, Sierra Shelton, Tevin Sylvester, Faye Valerio, Erika Wheeler.  Faculty sponsors are Tracey Smithey, Angela Chapin, Michelle Fisackerly, and Dexter Peterson. The musical will be on Jan. 30 and 31, 7:00 nightly, in the VHS auditorium. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased in advance from cast members or at the door. The PTO will meet on Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All parents and faculty are invited to attend. Please submit any items for discussion at the meeting or any ideas for the betterment of our school to vicksburghs@gmail.com.

Graduating seniors of 2015 are reminded that Feb. 6 is the deadline to submit their one-page essay on “The Importance of Volunteerism” sponsored by the United Way. No late entries will be accepted. First place winner will receive a $500 book scholarship, and the second place winner will receive a $250 book scholarship.
