The VHS family congratulates Mrs. Donna Carpenter on being chosen as the Vicksburg Chamber of Commerce Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Kevia Davis traveled with Dr. Tameka Henderson to WLBT to discuss the S.A.V.E. grant that VHS was awarded and the activities done thus far on the mid-day report.
The VHS National Honor Society would like to thank those who donated to the clothing drive. It was a huge success. The clothes were donated to Mountain of Faith Ministries.
The VHS Varsity and Women’s Choir participated in the District Choral Competition in Pearl. Both choirs earned superior ratings. Students from VHS Family and Consumer Science class were afforded the opportunity to go behind the scenes of WLBT3/FOX 40 News Studios in Jackson, MS. News anchor Joy Redmon allowed the students to sit behind the news desk and read actual news clips of leading stories in the local area. The next field trip will be to the Mississippi Baking Company in Pelahatchie, MS on Feb. 24. All visits are geared toward exposing students to diverse career paths.
There will be a senior transition meeting at Hinds Vo-Tech Center on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 3:00 p.m.
The VHS S.A.V.E. Chapter will host a Prom Safety Awareness Day on Friday, Feb. 27, for Juniors and Seniors in the auditorium. The guest speaker will be Ms. Cassandra Reed, founder of the ARL Project. Members of the community will set up booths during lunch so students can participate in various activities and pick up valuable information.
All Juniors will be given the ACT on Mar. 3. Parents of Juniors are asked to make sure their child is present and on time. The cost of the ACT is covered by the state. Students can practice using the ACT section of USA Test Prep. For login information, contact the Guidance Office of VHS.

The VHS Choral Department will present their 2nd Annual Gospel Concert on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 6:30 p.m., in the school auditorium. Admission is $3.

The PTO will be selling U-laces as a fundraiser during students’ lunch period on Monday and Tuesday.  A table will be set up in the hall near the cafeteria.

The VHS Family congratulates former VHS student and Super Bowl Champ Malcolm Butler on a fantastic performance with the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Our Gator Spotlight featured Mr. Troy Stewart, Jr., a math teacher at VHS.

The VHS Key Club members are in the middle of their Vicksburg Kiwanis Club Chili Feast ticket drive. The chili will be prepared by Kiwanis and Key Club volunteers on Feb. 13. All proceeds will go to the Vicksburg Kiwanis Youth Fund. Last year this program provided 13 scholarships; eleven of them went to VHS graduates. Please help our students help themselves.

On Feb. 6 the guidance office will sponsor a college day visit to Hinds Community College in Raymond for students to participate in their “Eagle Experience 2015”. Students will have a chance to learn about several areas of interest, tour the Raymond Campus, interact with faculty and students, and enjoy free food and prizes. Students must sign up in the guidance office by Feb. 2.

Are you wondering what to do with those gently worn clothes and shoes lying around the house? Well, we have an option for you. The VHS chapter of the National Honor Society will hold a clothing drive from Feb. 2-13. All items can be dropped off in an English teacher’s classroom.

The induction ceremony for the new members of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society will be Feb. 6, 11 a.m., in the auditorium.

The VHS boys’ soccer team traveled to Lewisburg, MS to compete in the Class 5A soccer tournament and the girls’ soccer team played at home. The VHS family is proud of their valiant effort in these competitions.

Thanks to everyone who made the VHS Fine Arts department’s musical presentation of “Tarzan” a tremendous success.

Graduating seniors of 2015 are reminded that Feb. 6 is the deadline to submit their one-page essay on “The Importance of Volunteerism” sponsored by the United Way. No late entries will be accepted. First place winner will receive a $500 book scholarship, and the second place winner will receive a $250 book scholarship.
